Mandy unlocked the door to the shabby, run down, lease apartment. It felt weird to unlock it and not just go straight there. She had just reaped some parents. And where there are parents, it is usually a kid that's around 13, or at least in their teens. This was a little five year old boy. She looked back at the small little guy standing beside her, and just saw what happened in his eyes.
Mandy stood infront of a completely dark house at midnight. It was a simi-normal reap. She had to break into the magical house, but that was it. Not much to it, just to do it. So she made like dust and went through the door, ending up right infront of the door. She looked around and saw what looked like a master bedroom door, and ended up in a coat closet. A few more wrong turns and she finally got into the room. It had nothing in it but a bed and two nightstands. All the pictures from the wall where down, and tarp was laid out around the walls. She guessed paint poisening or something. But it didn't matter. She went over to the bed, and touched both of their arms. The wife woke up immiediatly, and looked startled, and screamed. Mandy winced, and was already running towards the door but it was hard because there were books and everything on the floor. She dodged a sharp looking mirror that was just sitting there, and some metal weights. She looked to the doorway to find a little boy standing there, and it clicked. She wasn't thinking, but she turned around, and yelled, "STOP!!" It was too late. The woman tripped over some books and landed on the weights, and the husband rushed towards her, but was caught on the mirror. She looked at the boy, grabbing him, and taking him away. She rushed to her flat.
"Well, this is my home."

"Ah, young reaper, do you ever learn?" Of course, it was not Diane, or Mildred. Neither was it anyone that Mandy It also was not any of the reapers that young reaper, Mandy, actually knew. Fatum, also known as Fate, sat on the small and Grundy coach. She sat, holding a huge book in her arms since she had forgotten her messenger bag that normally took the huge burden. "Seriously, a kid? You're what, twenty five? Four?" she guessed, holding up one finger, and then another. "Number one, it's just not realistic and two, it's just not right." She plopped her book on the coach and stood so that Mandy could see her clearly. "And he's not even magical, is he?"

"Yes, he is magical, and I just, well took him...wait!" She finally realized that he could hear the whole conversation. She placed a freezing spell over the room, except for her and the strange lady sitting on her couch. "I think I could take care of him, you know....I'm sure I could. I mean, I have a job, and a place for him to stay... I bet he is magical, because I reaped his parents, and they lived in a magical house, so unless they bought it from a magical family, and the family left some sort of spell over the house, then they are. And he is like 5 or 6...I don't have to change dipers, and he is in school, so he takes care of himself. He is quiet, so what's to it?" She was reasoning with herself more than the lady. "Who are you?" she asked.

"Wow, you aren't as smart as a lot of the recruitees, are you?" Fate loved playing this game with newbies. She acted like the ruthless daughter of Death and mostly like a bitch until she felt like ending the game. By then, she was already respected in the way that fear can bring and she could play around with the reaper without back-sass. She had developed this plan after being the play-thing of a mortal child who had manipulated and used her and eventually left her vunerable. That little girl was now going to Oxford college. Fate had decided not to put forth her revenge. . . . Yet. That could come later. "I'm Fatum. Fate, basically. Holder of The Book," she said the 'the' with a slight change in her tone.

Her eyes widened. The Book. THE freakin book. "Do you decide who dies, or do you just keep it safe or something?" Important information. She really needed like some information book or something, with everything a reaper would ever need to know. Reaper's Life For Dummies. She should write that book.... "Are you like the daughter of Death or something?"

Fate rolled her eyes, "Of course I'm Death's daughter." Fate looked slightly like Diane, but only in the hair and cheek bones. The eye colors were the same, but nearly all of them except Destiny had those strange black eyes. "And Death decides that." She grabbed the book and flipped it open. Millions of post-it's were scattered out through it as she flipped the pages. She finally came to next week's date and ripped out a page. She ripped out all seven pages and then motioned for Kitty to sit down. The child was still frozen, so she didn't offer him a seat.

Mandy sat down, but very slowly, she was very uneasy by this. "So, does she fliip through the phone book, and decides 'Jeff Daniels is going to die at 3:47 PM on 9th Street' or what? I was never really breifed on any of this. I was just told what to do, and how to....die basically..

"That later," said Fate before handing Mandy the seven pages. She ripped an empty one from the 'notes' section and began to write down a time, location, and a few names. "Now, this is your reaps for the next week. I'm giving you more than anyone could possibly do in one day because you are to meet these reapers," she motioned at the names (Not names of real reapers, by the way) "Give them A post-it and then leave. They all live in the same apartment complex so just drop by and give them to all the folks on the first floor. That's five people. I would do this myself, but I'm sure you can do it without screwing up." She sighed, "Another reason I'm here. Apparently, your head reaper didn't do their job properly. My cousin has always been a bit of a slacker if you ask me," she spoke about Mil who was, in fact, her cousin on Mil's real mom's side. "I'm also here to answer any stupid questions you may have. Yes, I said stupid questions. If you haven't figured it out already, it's stupid."

"Caring about someone is stupid now. Got it." She said, sarcasticly. "Mil told me that she could touch James or whatever, I havn't really tried, because it might freak him out. So, do you think it will happen?" She asked, pretending like the sarcastic comment didn't happen. "And do I talk to him about what happened? He's only 5, do you think he could take that?" She had already developed a attachment to the little guy. It was totally unproffesional. At first, she was just going to drop him off at the house after the bodies had been found, or something along those lines, but then she really got a look at him, and something clicked in her. Her human instincts started to come around, and she was extremely confused. "oh, and I think I could do that job easy."

"No, not knowing how to do the job that is just as easy as touching some random when you are already given everything you need to know is stupid. Saving people is of no object to me, but if I did car, I would, I'm sure." She said the last bit with a tinge of sarcasm. "You can touch him all ya want! Unless your intent is to reap or soul switch, you won't hurt him one bit. But no kissing. Mil may have been leinient on you, but your new boss, A.K.A Me, is very strict when it comes to reaper-human sexual relations. We have way too much undeads roaming around already without you popping out one more."

Her face instantly went to a gross expression. "That's gross. He's FIVE!" She said, her face still disgusted. "So, I just have to deliver these little post its to the reapers down stairs, then do my own?" She asked, making sure she had it clear. "And, I'm going to keep him. The police would get involved if I just dropped him off...." She trailed off, looking back at him. He was so small. She felt deeply sorry for him, his life tangled. "I don't think he could handle the truth, but he deserves to know I didn't kill them."

"Fine. Be that way. But, I have one question." Time to bring out the Witch that lay hidden in Fate's little file cabinet of a brain. She had been waiting for her to say something else about him so that she could say this. She stood and walked over to him, cradling his face in her right hand. She turned and looked at Mandy. "What do you think will happen when he grows up and notices that Mommy's not getting any older? Or what if you have to reap one of his friends and he brings up some forgotten memories? What about when Mommy has to suddenly move and change her face? I doubt being a parent will be so damned easy then, eh?" Her face was curled into a harsh sneer. Fate was currently on the hunt for a new mortal companion because, unlike her mother, she could actually date those of the mortal variety. Besides, she would hate to have to date some moldy old reaper such as soon-to-be Stepdad, Robb.

"Then I will tell him." She said, glaring back at Fate. "Just because I'm not telling him more than he can handle, doesn't mean I'm not telling him ever. And I'm not his mom. I never will be, and I'm fine with that fact. He will have to deal, because we're really all each other got." She was standing now, walking over to him. "He will know his mom and dad died. I just adopted him. I will tell him everything when he gets older." She prayed to God, he would understand.

"You expect anyone to act sanely when they figure out that the person who parented them, acted as the closest thing to a mom he had, took him to school, bought him new shoes, is, in fact, not even a member of the living breathing society? I don't think so."

"He would take it better than most! I can tell he is strong!" She was totally making that up. But, then again, he hadn't totally broke down sobbing on her that his parents died. But could he take it twice? His parents dieing, and then learning she isn't really alive either. "So, what? I just pretend to be normal? Or do I tell him right now? We can make jokes about when he's older and understands?" She added the last part sarcastically.

"Sweetheart, let me tell you something." She let go of the child's face and stepped closer to Mandy. "He'll be easy to fool now, but what about later? Now, he can forget almost entirely about his past parents. Sure, they'll be a fragment of memory if that, but he'll 'lovel' you by then. I suggest you make it plain that you aren't his mom, but you love him anyways. You are not normal and neither is he. The sooner he accepts both facts, the sooner you can work on being a good parent."

That confused her to no end. "I should tell him we aren't normal? I should tell him he might be a wizard,, and I'm a witch/reaper? Plus, I don't want him to forget his parents. It's awful being made to forget your past." She said, looking at him. How could he ever come to face the facts that he would never have a normal life. "I just want what's best for him, and right now I can't figure it out." She sounded pitiful, but it was the truth. She wasn't crying though, she knew better than to cry in front of this new lady.

"Even if you weren't here, he'd forget what his parents were like when he was five anyways. Hell, even I forget some things about when I was five. " Fate looked down on the girl with an immense sense of pity and minor revultion (It was in her genes to be revulted by weakness, her Mom was Death for Christ's Sake!) "If you want, I'll ask Dee to write something in his book to grant him some special ability. She controls the books of life and," She shrugged, "She owes me one."

She had only met this person a couple minutes ago, and she gave off the vibe that she didn't usually help people out. "As much ass that would help me out, I don't think I could," she looked over at the boy, "he deserves things to be as normal as they can be. He is liviing with a reaper for God's sake. But, I don't know. What powers were you thinking?"

"Depends on what you would call 'normal'. We do basically anything." She nodded.

"So, you can make him....change colors with his mood?" She said, jokingly. "I think that it would be nice if he were....magical and....any suggestions?" She asked, really not coming up with anything.
